Green Packaging Solutions: Grass Paper is in Vogue
Online shopping is booming, and retailers rely on cardboard boxes and boxes made of cardboard or cellulose-based solid cardboard to ship many packages. Coffee mugs and another food packaging cannot be achieved without cellulose. Grass paper is often discussed as an alternative to this. Paper: Ecologically Balanced Alternative
The production of paper requires a lot of energy, water, and wood. It takes years for trees to grow as the basis for pulp production. This is different from grass. Green waste will be available again within a few months after the harvest. When the packaging material, in this case, the packaging made of grass, is in the hands of the consumer, the raw material is usually already growing. The amount of CO2 emitted can be offset in a short time.
Compared to traditional cellulose, grasses have a significantly better ecological balance:
1. Carbon Dioxide: Instead of the 1.5 tonnes of CO2 produced by the production of 1 ton of paper, the same amount of soybean paper produces only 0.8 tonnes, a reduction of almost half.
2. Water Consumption: A ton of cellulose made from grass requires about 99.99 per cent less water and chemicals than a ton of cellulose made from wood.
3. Energy consumption: Pulp made from grass is about 25 per cent less than pulp made from fresh fibre. This figure clearly shows the economic benefits of a package made of grass. But how does the grass actually turn into the grass? And why is energy consumption so low in the production of grass paper for green packaging?
How grass paper is made
After the sun hay is harvested, the hay is processed in a mobile fibre plant. First washed, then the fibre length is cut. Finally, press and store in a dry place. The processing is purely mechanical, so very little energy is required. Another advantage is the long shelf life of hay bales, bulk commodities, or pellets. In contrast to possible alternatives such as straw, leaves, and tropical leaves, the raw materials are available all year round, regardless of the season.
Hay comes from an unfertilised compensation area, preferably. This means that thousands of tonnes of the pulp can be replaced, for example, eucalyptus, which is often used in papermaking. After all, the final product is made up of about half the grass fibre and half the cellulose.
